Coaching and its Cousins
(Consultant, Counsellor, Therapist, Mentor)
What is Coaching?
Coaching provides a creative space where you are the full focus of attention, where your potential, values, dreams, goals and life purposes are fully explored; and where you are encouraged to adopt empowering expectations for your life and work. Through supportive deep listening, intuitive questioning, and accountability to your own stated intentions, the coaching process facilitates insight and inspires you to action. You are given the space to gain insight and strategic wisdom, and find the courage to put your plans into practice as you learn to depend on the energies of the Holy Spirit. My goal through the coaching relationship is to empower you by helping you to understand who you are, what you really want, and what you need to do.
Christian coaching is a 3 - way relationship between the client/disciple, coach and Holy Spirit, recognising the centrality of Christ in your life, the call of God on your life and the role of the Holy Spirit centre stage working through your life.
The coaching relationship works both for short bursts of time eg. two or three months at a time with a weekly or fortnightly session on one single topic, and as an ongoing fortnightly or monthly sounding board/accountability support where new issues are introduced as they arise.
Are we consultants?
No. The traditional understanding of a consultant is of a specialist, hired to offer advice and find solutions in work based situations, working with the client in a specific area and on specific issues. At The Coaching Dynamic, we explore your the nature of an undetermined or known problem in conversation with one or more relevant parties, and once the problem has been thoroughly identified, we lead the decision maker(s) towards setting goals to resolve it. As coaches, we find the right questions that lead you, the client to the right solution in your field. Though we don’t offer advice, we use coaching principles and frameworks which help you to see your situation differently. “The 5 Senses of Self framework” may also be referred to if appropriate.
Do you offer counselling, therapy or mentoring?
No. A Counsellor is a specialist who works with a client struggling to cope with specific issues which are rooted in the past and which are holding them back. Counsellors generally work in specific subject areas where a specialised knowledge is required - for example bereavement counselling, marital counselling, addiction counselling etc. If a counselling need becomes evident during coaching sessions, we will ask if you wish to be referred to a counsellor.
A Therapist is more likely to work over a longer period of time and more intensively with the client at a deeper level of the personality. While coaching is more interested in the present and the future, both counselling and therapy have a stronger interest in how past experiences influence the clients present. Counselling and therapy are words which are often used interchangeably.
Lastly, we don’t provide Mentoring. A mentor is usually an expert in their particular field, and works with the mentee to offer knowledge and wisdom relevant to the mentee’s requirements. In the employment context, a mentor works with a less experienced colleague in the same organisation or field. The Mentor shares knowledge and wisdom specific to the role, including knowledge of skills, specific business culture and organisational structure. So a lawyer would mentor a lawyer, an engineer an engineer and so on. The mentor focuses on the role and knowledge of the mentee. A coach however, focuses more on the person being coached, and the process of personal and professional development.
So, by way of recap, coaching provides a creative space where you are the full focus of attention, where your potential, values, dreams, goals and life purposes are fully explored; and where you are encouraged to adopt empowering expectations for your life. Through supportive deep listening, intuitive questioning, and accountability to your own stated intentions, the coaching process inspires you to greater levels of awareness and action. You are given the space to gain insight and strategic wisdom, and find the courage to put your plans into practice as you learn to depend on the energies of the Holy Spirit. My goal through the coaching relationship is to empower you by helping you to understand who you are, what you really want, and what you need to do.
We hope from these descriptions above, that you can ascertain whether coaching is a form of support which will benefit you.
Every situation in life and every challenge we face, calls from us a self definition big enough to meet the challenge. A strong man who sees himself as weak cannot easily stand up to a weaker man who sees himself as strong. How we see ourselves determines how we present ourselves.
There are many positive self definitions we can live from and aspire towards, which determine the outcome of our interactions, which determine whether we stand up or back down, put our hand to the task, or stand aside and let someone else do what was ours to do.
We don't have to be a perfect example of the type of person we aspire to be, for the identity to make a positive difference to the way we live. Jesus said of Simon the fisherman "your name is the rock" and Simon became Peter (Rock) the Apostle even though he was the least rocklike of all his contemporaries!
A positive identity will begin to frame all of our responses and the expectations we have of ourselves. It will determine the outcome of our lives. It is legitimate to say, "Iam courageous, Iam compassionate, Iam creative, I am rocklike" even if we are not a perfect representation of that person yet. At the very least it can be a statement of intent. So which identity do you need to live from, in order that the change you desire will come to pass? And which name is Jesus giving to you for this season of your life?
The power of Christian self identity is that it isnt a self identity, it's Christ's identity infusing me with all that's good about Him, making me more of who I have the potential to become. Who I am is infused with all that Christ is, so that I can say "As he is so are we in this world..." and "Christ in me the hope of glory..."
Just as a glove is made in the image of the hand which fills it and fulfills it, so I am made in the image of God, who fills me and fulfills me. I am made with the capacity for intellect, reason, emotion, creativity, ingenuity, compassion, courage and the desire to live a life of virtue, ready to be filled with the God who fulfills my purpose. Iam fulfilled, as Jesus, who is the perfect image of God lives in me. I retain my individuality but I become so much more. It's not self denying, it's self fulfilling.
For the Christian, every life question is a discipleship question as we learn to live from our identity in Christ, both dependently and powerfully. As a Christian coach I use non directive, intuitive, supportive and challenging questions to help you live from your identity in Christ, to help you see clearly and make courageous transformational decisions which fulfil your potential and maximise your life opportunities.
Christian coaching is a three - way relationship between the client/disciple, coach and Holy Spirit, recognising the centrality of Christ in your life, the call of God on your life and the role of the Holy Spirit centre stage working through your life.
On the surface level, the coaching relationship provides a creative space where you are the full focus of attention, where your potential, values, dreams and goals are fully explored and where you are encouraged to adopt empowering expectations for your life.
Through deep listening and intuitive questioning, coaching facilitates greater levels of self awareness, helping you to reflect on the realities of your current situation - understanding what's working well and what could work better, within yourself and your wider context at work and life in general.
You are helped to consider all the options before you, thinking creatively about what could be done differently, and set yourself specific goals and tasks to move yourself forward, addressing areas where your faith for change is weak.
But the more profound intention of coaching is transformation. It is one thing to set a goal, find a purpose and change some habits, but transformation most often comes through the embrace of a new empowered identity free from the limitations of previous mental and emotional blocks. The butterfly must let go of the chrysalis cage in order to flex its wings of freedom.
My hope is that this is how coaching with me will impact you, and, in addition, that you will have learnt some skills to be able to coach yourself and hear the leading and invitation of the Holy Spirit, as He teaches, guides, mentors and coaches you into a more fulfilled and purposeful life.

We understand your concern. Like you, we've invested many £1000's in our own personal development and we've found that even the best courses with the best content only delver to the degree that we've been willing to do the work. The best development courses have great teaching content, but they also have great coaching questions which lead to the most powerful personal insights. Transformation happens through the dynamic of great teaching, coaching, personal reflection and positive action. We are confident that if you do the work through this Life Direction Programme - you will get a result.
YES, within a reasonable timescale. You can complete the videos and assignments on the membership page within 12 months, however you will have to book your MBTI assessment within 3 months of booking onto the programme. Everyone has a preferred pace at which to work, but we think that 3 hours a week over 8 weeks should be sufficient time to complete the programme. Of course, the more time you spend reflecting on and responding to the coaching questions will mean that you have a deeper, more profound result.
Once you've completed the training, you'll be invited to book your 1-to-1 implementation coaching session with one of the course creators. This will help you to set some laser targeted goals for moving forward and enable you to successfully navigate some of the obstacles which lay in your way. Following your coaching session, you can then jump onto the group coaching mastermind sessions, which will give you 6 months of further empowerment, as you put into practice everything that you have learned through the programme.
YES! If, once you've finished the programme and completed the assignments, you are not satisfied with the understanding you've gained about yourself and your life direction, we will ask for some proof from your competed assignments, and then we will give you a 100% refund. We are confident however that you will be completely pleased with the result you gain from the effort you put into this Life Direction Programme.
First, you are invited to book a 5 to 10 minute call with either myself or Catherine, to enable you to ask any question which is on your mind in relation to the Emerge Programme. Second, we invite you to take a look at the testimonials on this website - including reviews of those of who have completed the programme, and reviews of books I have written and comments from teachers and students at schools we have sold previous products to. These should give you confidence that the work we do is for real people.
